Research and Development

R&D in construction is a process that begins in the laboratory and finds its application on-site. The goal is not to invent something new, but to find ways to do the same job more safely, more quickly, and with fewer resources.

We base our material selections on test data. Concrete mix designs, reinforcement details, and insulation solutions are evaluated according to the actual conditions the project will face.

In our construction method development efforts, we analyze recurring production items and make improvements to formwork systems, prefabrication, and on-site logistics. The time saved in these areas translates to the entire project.

We use digital engineering tools (building information modeling, clash detection, and schedule simulation) during the design and planning phases. A significant portion of the issues that may arise on-site can be identified at this stage.

The output of every task is documented and serves as the starting point for future projects. Our organizational knowledge base is tied to the system, not to individuals.

R&D expenditures are typically deferred in the construction industry because their returns are not realized in the same project but in subsequent ones. However, even a small improvement in construction methods creates a multiplier effect on recurring production items: half a day saved during a formwork cycle turns into weeks over hundreds of repetitions. Similarly, pre-testing material behavior prevents application errors that would otherwise occur on-site and the associated rework costs. At Exsol Construction, we therefore view R&D not as a separate budget line item, but as an integral part of the construction discipline.

Our efforts yield results not only in terms of cost and time, but also in terms of workplace safety and environmental impact. Shifting repetitive, high-risk on-site tasks to off-site pre-production directly reduces the risk of workplace accidents. Initiatives focused on material efficiency and waste management, meanwhile, lower projects’ carbon footprints.
